Turfway track report

FLORENCE, Ky. - It was one year ago that Golden Oldie hit the top of the Turfway Park race charts. A five-length romp by Golden Oldie in the Dust Commander Stakes gave David Asbury perhaps the greatest thrill of his training career.

"He ran a great race that day," said Asbury. "I'd have to say it was one of my best days in this business."

Golden Oldie will attempt to give Asbury a similar feeling when the 7-year-old horse returns in the $50,000 Dust Commander at Turfway. A full field of 12 older horses was entered in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Offlee Wild burns in Fountain work

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - If nothing else, Offlee Wild proved on Wednesday morning that he can work awfully fast.

In his final tune-up for Saturday's $200,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes, Offlee Wild turned in a torrid five-furlong work. Gulfstream Park's official clockers caught him in 57.40 seconds, while Daily Racing Form timed him in 58.

Regardless, it was a fast work, the best of 34 at the distance and a full second faster than the next-quickest work. It was one of just two five-furlong works that were faster than one minute.

Debonair Joe tries softer spot

ARCADIA, Calif. - After a remarkable December campaign in which he pulled upsets in two graded stakes, former claimer Debonair Joe returns to a more modest level of competition in a $70,000 allowance race at Santa Anita on Friday.

The winner of the Grade 3 Vernon Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park at 52-1 on Dec. 7 and the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 at 26-1, Debonair Joe returns following a sixth in the Sunshine Millions Sprint on Jan. 25.

"He came out of that race pretty sharp," trainer Juan Pablo Silva said. "I'm expecting him to run a big race."

Female riders take spotlight

A four-day holiday weekend at Portland Meadows in Portland, Ore., kicks off Friday night with the Powder Puff Derby.

The six-furlong race for $4,000 claimers who have never won two races drew a field of six. Each entrant in the race for older fillies and mares will have a woman jockey.

Portland Meadows officials hoped to find eight entrants for the race so that all eight of the local women riders could compete.

Visiting filly to try Silverbulletday

NEW ORLEANS - It's hard to send a good horse packing, but trainer Greg Foley spends his winters racing at Turfway Park. There are stakes there for his 3-year-old filly, Golden Marlin, but Foley thinks Golden Marlin has earned a chance in better races. So about two weeks ago, Foley, who is based at Churchill Downs, put Golden Marlin on a van bound for Fair Grounds.

You prefers running to rest

ARCADIA, Calif. - You, the star 3-year-old filly in trainer Bobby Frankel's stable last year, was supposed to get a vacation after the La Brea Stakes on Dec. 28.

It's safe to say the filly had other ideas about her short-term future.

In late December, Frankel said he would give You a few months of light exercise at the start of 2003 to have her ready for the major races of the summer and fall. After Frankel noticed she continued to train well, he changed his plans.
