ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Regal 'n Bold and unbeaten Deputy Cures Blues stand out in Wednesday's $129,500 Victorian Queen Stakes, a six-furlong race for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine.
Regal 'n Bold, a striking daughter of Bold Executive, destroyed a weak field of Ontario-sired maidens two weeks ago, winning by nearly 12 lengths after a wide stalking trip over an outside-biased track. Her time of 1:04.80 seconds was good for a whopping Beyer Speed Figure of 90.
FRESNO, Calif. - California's fair circuit winds up its racing season as the Big Fresno Fair opens a 10-day meeting Wednesday.
The highlight of the meet is the $102,000 Ron and Jess Cloud Memorial, a six-furlong race for 2-year-olds scheduled for Saturday.
The Memorial, which has been run since 1998, is the richest race on the California Authority of Racing Fairs schedule. It has offered a six-figure purse for the past three years with the fair putting up $50,000 and the Cloud family putting up the rest.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Russell Baze, the nation's leading rider in victories, notched five wins on Sunday's card at Bay Meadows.
Baze won the first race aboard Twelveyearslater ($6.20). He won the second aboard River Bridge ($4.40) when original winner Madison Davis was disqualified and placed last. He won the fifth aboard Colonel Kelly ($5.80), then teamed with leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who had three wins, with Lucky Sabre ($15.60) in the sixth. His final winner was aboard Surprise Halo ($5) in the eighth.
He also had a second and two thirds on his other mounts.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wake At Noon probably clinched the Sovereign Award for Canada's champion sprinter this year by capturing the Grade 3, $160,800 at Woodbine Sunday.
Wake At Noon stalked the pace on the outside in the six-furlong dash, running four-wide on the turn, as Davids Expectation and Krz Ruckus dueled through splits of :22.37 and :45.02 seconds.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Two weeks after his untimely scratch at Turfway Park, Tenpins scored a game victory over Generous Rosi in the Grade 3, $400,000 on Sunday at Arlington.
Tenpins set a track record of 1:55.07 for 1 3/16 miles, racing gamely through the stretch under Robby Albarado to hold of Generous Rosi, who led for most of the Washington Park and came back bravely after being passed in the upper stretch.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Irish invader Ballingarry relished the yielding turf and beat his eight opponents with ease in Sunday's Grade 1, $1.5 million , the eighth leg of the 2002 World Series Racing Championship.
Ballingarry was world renowned trainer Aidan O'Brien's first Woodbine starter. It was also the first Woodbine mount for jockey Mick Kinane, who said the 3-year-old son of Sadler's Wells was very professional in winning the mile and a half event, with an ideal stalking trip near front-running Yavana's Pace.
Bossier City, La. - Mekko Hokte took advantage of a spirited duel between favored Hannah's Royalrock and Hadif's Allstar and rallied from off the pace under Tim Doocy to prevail by a head over Hadif's Allstar in Sunday's $30,000 Delta Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Obligatory was four lengths further back in third, followed by a tiring Hannah's Royalrock.
ELMONT, N.Y. - As good as Funny Cide looked winning his debut by 14 3/4 lengths, he looked even better winning Sunday's $83,975 Bertram F. Bongard Stakes at Belmont Park.
Funny Cide, with Jose Santos in the saddle, was a nine-length winner of the Bongard for 2-year-old New York-breds. The winner covered the seven furlongs in a quick 1:22.95 - a stakes record - over a fast track.
Spite the Devil finished second, two lengths in front of Infinite Justice. Storm Cadet, the favorite, finished fourth in the 10-horse field.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Denon, narrowly defeated in the United Nations and Sword Dancer, broke through with a win in Sunday's $750,000 at Belmont Park before a crowd of 7,793.
Denon, with Edgar Prado aboard, found an opening in the stretch of the 1 1/2-mile Turf Classic and held off longshot Blazing Fury for a half-length win. It was another head back to Delta Form in third in the Grade 1 Turf Classic.
With Anticipation, the second choice in the eight-horse field, finished sixth.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Only The Best ($5.60) sat off the sizzling pace of Gray Jag, caught him in the stretch and pulled away to an easy four-length victory in the $70,800 Malcolm Anderson Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.
Gray Jag, who was fractious in the paddock, had a one-length lead after a 22.05 opening quarter. He opened a 2 1/2-length lead with a 43.96 half. Only The Best cut the lead to only a length in the stretch and clearly had the leader measured. He ran six furlongs in 1:09.01.
