Your Out takes the plunge on turf

Seven stakes share the card with the Classic on Maryland Million Day at Pimlico Saturday.

The $100,000 Ladies, a 1 1/8-mile turf race, has some intrigue as it has attracted Obeah winner Your Out, who has never raced on the grass. In July, Your Out came within a neck of beating Summer Colony, the top older filly or mare on the East Coast, in the Grade 3 Delaware Handicap.

Graham Motion, who trains Your Out, a daughter of Allen's Prospect, said he would be delighted if the race was rained off the turf but he would run her either way.

Trapped tongue explains fave's poor race

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Trainer Paul Nielsen was puzzled when Le Cinquieme Essai finished last in the Grade 3 Col. R.S. McLaughlin Handicap last Saturday at Woodbine.

The problem, he discovered moments after the race, was that the horse's tongue was trapped over the bit. A figure-eight nose band didn't allow the mouth to open and breathing was difficult. Jockey Brian Bochinski, sensing trouble, didn't punish his mount.

Ninebanks defends his home turf

SAN MATEO, Calif. - How much the home course advantage means could determine the outcome of Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Handicap.

The 1 1/8-mile turf race, the premier event of the fall meeting, drew only five horses.

Unlike the four-horse field in the San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile last spring, which included Sarafan and Decarchy, who were then the two of the highest-rated turf runners in the country, Saturday's race includes only one graded-stakes winner, David Copperfield, winner of the Grade 3 Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park in 2000.
