Can't keep Kid down on the farm

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - It didn't take long for owner-trainer Shauna Ferguson to change her mind regarding the possible retirement of Kid Katabatic.

After the Kid, a 9-year-old gelding, finished last in the B.C. Cup Classic on Aug. 5, Ferguson planned to turn him out for the rest of the year and possibly retire him.

But Kid Katabatic has always had a mind of his own, and when he arrived at the farm of his part owners Mel and Lindsey Russell, he showed his displeasure with the idea of a life of leisure.

McKee nears Cauthen's mark

CINCINNATI - Like Steve Cauthen before him, John McKee is a local boy dominating the River Downs standings as a young apprentice.

The similarities don't go much farther than that, since McKee, 21, obviously has a long way to go before he attains the kind of fame and fortune that Cauthen found in his Hall of Fame career.

Lone Star Sky a standout

CINCINNATI - River Downs is considered a little racetrack, but that doesn't mean big horses never race here.

River's signature race, the Cradle Stakes, has produced horses of national significance. It happened in the mid-1980's when Spend a Buck won the Cradle before becoming a Kentucky Derby champion the following spring, and it happened last year when Harlan's Holiday won the Cradle before capturing such major races as the Florida Derby and Blue Grass Stakes.

Rematch not to be

SAN MATEO, Calif. - A rematch of Bay Meadows's race of the year in 2001 will not take place in Monday's $100,000 California Turf Championship.

The one-mile race for California-breds was expected to match millionaire Native Desert and Spinelessjellyfish, who dead-heated in the 2001 running.

Juan Garcia said Saturday that 9-year-old Native Desert, a three-time winner of the race, had injured an ankle during a Friday gallop.

"It was a little swollen," he said. "I don't want to take a chance."

Chauffe au Rouge home for Barksdale

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Chauffe au Rouge, who was an explosive winner of the $50,000 Retama Turf Cup in his last start, returns to his home course Monday as the 120-pound highweight in the $50,000 Barksdale Handicap at Louisiana Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and up drew a field of eight, including the winner of the Grade 3 Texas Mile, Unrullah Bull, who is coupled with Chauffe au Rouge, and Rebridled and Big Numbers, who finished second and third to Prince Iroquois last month in the $50,000 Ark-La-Tex Handicap.

Frankel has both ends covered

Horsephotos
On Sunday, Squirtle Squirt makes only his second start since winning the B.C. Sprint (above).

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Not only is Bobby Frankel a very good trainer, he's also a pretty fair handicapper, and that is why he decided to enter Aldebaran along with Squirtle Squirt in Sunday's $250,000 Forego Handicap.

With Squirtle Squirt, the lightning-fast Orientate, and California invader Explicit in the field, Frankel figures the Forego could set up for a horse from off the pace. And Aldebaran has the running style that may make him the one to beat in the 6 1/2-furlong, Grade 1 race.
