Ginger Gold seeks redemption

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Ginger Gold and Silver Nithi, the winners of the first two jewels of the Canadian triple tiara, clash Monday in the final leg of the series, the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes, a 1 1/4-mile turf race.

Monday's Woodbine card also features the Victoriana Stakes and a simulcast of the Manitoba Derby from Assiniboia Downs.

Ginger Gold, last year's Canadian champion

2-year-old filly, won the June 8 Labatt Woodbine Oaks with determination. She dueled through rapid fractions in the 1 1/8-mile Oaks, and held off a closing Silver Nithi.

Lord Nelson tries for repeat in Classic

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - B.C. Cup Day, featuring eight races restricted to B.C.-breds, seven of them stakes, is scheduled for this Monday afternoon at Hastings with the first post set for 2:23 pm.

Clearly the highlight of the day will be the match-up between Lord Nelson and Kid Katabatic in the $65,000 B.C. Cup Classic. The six other added money races are worth $50,000 each.

Will Classic be Kid's swan song?

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - One of the reasons Kid Katabatic is still competitive in stakes company as a 9-year-old is the way he's been handled by his owner-trainer Shauna Ferguson. As she puts it, she's babied him throughout his career. The Kid has started only 37 times and any time that he showed any signs of wear and tear, Ferguson would stop on him. Given his advanced age, and the way Ferguson treats him, it's very possible that this Monday's B.C. Cup Classic could be his last race.

Light field prompts Buck to change plans

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Slowly but surely, the prospective field for Monday's Victoriana Stakes diminished this week.

First it was Nymphenburg, the defending champion in the race, who was forced into retirement by injury.

Then Devastating, a multiple stakes winner, was taken out of consideration and pointed toward Saratoga's upcoming Ballerina.

Finally, Classic Ingrid, a stakes-placed filly in good form, suffered an untimely physical setback.

Boots On Sunday hangs on in Straus

Boots On Sunday dug down deep and held off Ski Bum by a neck to win his second straight $30,000 J.R. Straus Memorial on Friday at Retama Park before an opening night crowd of 4,569.

It was another length back in third to Two Punch Sonny.

Hopes high in spite of drought

EDMONTON, Alberta - Optimism remains high for the upcoming Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society preferred yearling sale at Northlands Park despite alarm bells ringing in other areas of the livestock industry on the prairies because of drought.

"We are anticipating at least being able to match last year's excellent sale when our average went from the previous year's $6,140 to $8,040," said Rennie Gellner, manager of the Alberta division of the CTHS.

The sale is scheduled for Aug. 25, a dark day following the Canadian Derby.

Bring your Ouija board for this one

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Extra sensory perception might be needed to pick the winner of the feature race at Hastings Park Sunday, a $15,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles.

All seven horses look like they have a shot at the win, and it's hard to separate the horses moving up off of sharp wins and the ones coming down after dull efforts.

Try horses whose goal is this race

AUBURN, Wash. - The Governor's Handicap, traditionally regarded as the final local prep for the Grade 3 Longacres Mile, has drawn a field of seven, going 6 1/2 furlongs for a purse of $60,000 at Emerald Downs Sunday.

No fewer than 14 horses have exited the Governor's and won the Mile in past years, and several in Sunday's field have their sights set on the Mile's $250,000 purse. Certainly among them are the field's highweights, Makors Mark and Radar Contact, whose reputations ensure that they will attract strong attention in the mutuels.
