ELMONT, N.Y. – Pretty N Cool, the runner-up to Songbird in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, drew post 5 in a six-horse field for Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Matron Stakes at Belmont. The race is for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Kiaran McLaughlin was monitoring important workouts on two fronts Thursday morning, with his top sprinting 3-year-old filly, Cavorting, breezing at Belmont Park and his leading older female, Wedding Toast, putting in a workout at Saratoga.
Cavorting, the probable favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland, breezed four furlongs in 49.54 seconds over the Belmont training track. For the second straight week, Cavorting went her first quarter (23.79 seconds) faster than her second (25.75) under exercise rider Renzo Morales.
Lucky Folie, third in the Surfer Girl Stakes on turf Oct. 10, will not start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 30.
Trainer Richard Mandella said he plans to start Lucky Folie in the $100,000 Desi Arnaz Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 15. Lucky Folie finished second in the Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf but was disqualified and placed third behind Mirage, who was checked in the stretch.
Mandella said Lucky Folie did not show enough in the performance to justify a trip to Kentucky.
ARCADIA, Calif. – There was no urgency to a five-furlong workout at Santa Anita on Thursday for the 4-year-old filly Taris, a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland on Oct. 31. She had displayed enough evidence of her speed in the L.A. Woman Stakes on Oct. 4.
Taris was part of a four-horse speed battle in the L.A. Woman that led to a half-mile in 43.45 seconds. She faded from contention to finish third, beaten 3 3/4 lengths by Ben’s Duchess.
On Thursday, Taris worked alone, going five furlongs in 1:01.80 under jockey Gary Stevens.
ARCADIA, Calif. – With two wins at Del Mar in August and one here at Santa Anita in September, Beholder has maintained a steady race schedule, affording trainer Richard Mandella the luxury of not having to press on her as she gears up to face males Oct. 31 in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.
When Beholder worked Thursday at Santa Anita, the intent was not so much to get her fit as it was to keep her where she is, which is a pretty good place.
“She’s had her racing,” said Mandella. “We don’t need to create anything at this point.”
Om, the winner of the Del Mar Derby on turf in his most recent start, worked five furlongs on dirt Wednesday in 59.20 seconds under jockey Gary Stevens at Santa Anita. Om, trained by Dan Hendricks, is scheduled to race again on turf Oct. 24 at Santa Anita in the Grade 2, $200,000 Twilight Derby, which is at the same 1 1/8-mile distance as the Del Mar Derby.
CYPRESS, Calif. – After stops in Dubai, England, Illinois, and Kentucky, California Chrome returned to trainer Art Sherman’s stable at Los Alamitos on Tuesday for the first time in nearly seven months.
He will not be going far for a while.
On Wednesday, California Chrome was tack-walked at Sherman’s barn, his first day of exercise designed to have him ready for a return to racing in early 2016. Sherman has the San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita on Jan. 9 as an early target.
“We’re kind of looking that way,” he said.
There may have been a passing of the torch at Charles Town last Saturday night when the 3-year-old Charitable Annuity finished strongly to win the $450,000 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic while the 9-year-old Russell Road backed up in the final three furlongs of the 1 1/8-mile race to finish ninth.
Both Russell Road and Charitable Annuity are owned by Mark Russell and trained by James W. Casey.
One of the more interesting horses on the Maryland Million card at Laurel Park on Saturday is Not Abroad, an 8-year-old who will run in the $150,000 Classic.
Not Abroad won the Classic in 2012, which encouraged his connections to run him in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Santa Anita. He bowed a tendon while finishing fifth in that race and soon afterward was reacquired by one of his breeders, Tom Bowman, and his children, Rebecca Davis and Brooke Bowman.
They bred Not Abroad to some mares, used him as a teaser, and finally turned him out.
