Rocky Gulch's reputation grows

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Owner-breeder Larry Teague's Rocky Gulch more than lived up to expectations in Saturday's $125,000-added , drawing off in the stretch under Mike Clark to win by 2 1/2 lengths while covering six furlongs in 1:09.16 despite a poor break.

Breaking last in the field of six, Rocky Gulch literally dragged Clark to the front and set fractions of 21.79 and 44.12 seconds with Jonnygetachex all out to keep up. Nearing the stretch, Clark loosened the reins a bit and Rocky Gulch took over and won with only mild urging.

Whoopi Cat may need one

Whoopi Cat, here winning the Adirondack at Saratoga last August, was sidelined for months because of nagging foot ailments.

ARCADIA, Calif. - is the lone graded stakes winner in Monday's $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita, but the six-month gap since her last race concerns trainer Patrick Biancone.

Whoopi Cat won the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga last August but missed important stakes later in the year because of a minor foot injury.

"She was supposed to be one of the best on the East Coast, but she had an abscess in each foot," Biancone said. "She's good now."

Ottawa Chief returns for 'Cappy'

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - ran lights-out in his inner-track debut on the day after Christmas. If he runs back to that race, Ottawa Chief is the one to beat in Monday's $75,000 Fred "Cappy" Capossela at Aqueduct.

The six-furlong Capossela drew seven 3-year-olds.

She's talented but unpredictable

A year and a half ago, Adopted Daughter won her career debut at Keeneland, running 4 1/2 furlongs in 52 seconds and smashing a field of precocious 2-year-olds. It's more than slightly plausible that this filly will breathe a sigh of relief when she returns to a dirt sprint in Monday's featured ninth race at Fair Grounds.

Fairly Ransom, here winning the Del Mar Derby, has a rematch with barnmate Sweet Return in the San Marcos.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The stunt that Julie Krone pulled off aboard in the Hollywood Derby will not work when Gary Stevens rides the colt in Monday's $150,000 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita.

After setting a pedestrian pace in the Hollywood Derby on Nov. 30 - dawdling fractions of 51.04 and 1:17.49 - Sweet Return pulled a 16-1 upset under Krone, edging stablemate Fairly Ransom.

In the San Marcos, over 1 1/4 miles on turf, Sweet Return's rivals are not expected to let Stevens get away with an uncontested lead.

Silent Sighs Millions-bound

ARCADIA, Calif. - Silent Sighs will be withdrawn from Monday's $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes and sent to Gulfstream Park for the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks on Saturday, trainer Julio Canani said.

Canani and owner Marty Wygod had debated on which race to try in recent days, but decided late Saturday morning to ship Silent Sighs to Gulfstream. She was entered for the Santa Ynez on Friday.

"This gives me five more days, even if she has to fly there," Canani said. "I think the race there will be easier than here."

St Averil wins Santa Catalina

St Averil (left) wins the Grade 2, $150,000 Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - St Averil proved raw talent can overcome lack of experience in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 at Santa Anita. In only the third start of his career, St Averil raced wide the entire way in the 1 1/16-mile race, yet still roared past the leaders for a stylish 1 1/2-length victory.

Lucky Pulpit, who forced a hot pace with Perfect Moon, finished second, two lengths in front of third-place Master David, who was making his first start since finishing second in Aqueduct's Remsen Stakes on Nov. 29.

Second of June strikes again

Second of June, under Cornelio Velasquez, finishes strongly to win the Holy Bull Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Second of June had just dominated a strong field of 3-year-olds, including Grade 1 winner Silver Wagon, in Saturday's $100,000 at Gulfstream Park. But trainer Bill Cesare took the victory in stride while putting the performance in proper prospective.

"It's just one race," said Cesare, who trains Second of June for his mother, Barbara Cesare. "It doesn't mean anything other than we just got $60,000. There are still a lot more races to come and a lot more good horses out there to run against.

'Gal' has much in her favor

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - She tried, but she couldn't do it. Gal O Gal attempted to win a Gulfstream Park turf stakes for the second straight year when she made her latest start in the Honey Fox Handicap on opening day, but she raced wide throughout after starting from the far outside post in a full field, and her usual late run was rendered ineffective.
