A third good Hollendorfer filly

ALBANY, Calif. - Heavenly Humor showed the depth of leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's 3-year-old filly band as she scored a five-length victory over Smoke Break in the $60,000 Miss California Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Heavenly Humor broke well and got over quickly to save ground behind a brisk early pace. She appeared to be in tight nearing the quarter pole but took advantage of an opening entering the stretch to split Smoke Break and pacesetting Little Foxy Baby. She then pulled away down the stretch.

Fair Grounds: Arcus alone on lead

A pace duel flattened Arcus in his last start. In the $75,000 Crescent City Derby at Fair Grounds, Arcus ($28.80) had things his way on the lead, and the more jockey Shane Laviolette asked, the more Arcus gave.

Walk This Way, the favorite, and Old Lee both made runs in the stretch, but Arcus had enough resolve to hold on for a 1 1/2-length win, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:48.04.

Laurel: Bronze Abe re-rallies

Jim McCue
Bronze Abe battles head-to-head almost to the finish line to win the $75,000 What A Summer Stakes at Laurel Park.

Jockey Erick Rodriguez came into the program at Laurel Park mired in a 1-for-44 slump to begin 2004. Rodriguez's bad luck looked as if it might continue when Bronze Abe won a pace duel with Bamba in the featured What a Summer Stakes only to give up the lead at top of the stretch.

Neither Rodriguez nor his mount gave up, however. Bronze Abe ($5.80) re-rallied and surged past Bamba in the final furlong to get up by a half-length in the $73,500 stakes for filly and mare sprinters. She covered six furlongs in 1:10.53.

Sharp mare continues moving up

ALBANY, Calif. - There aren't many sharper horses in northern California than Burning Brite, who may be the one to beat in a $25,000 claimer for fillies and mares at six furlongs Monday at Golden Gate Fields.

Sprint won't be easy for Valid Video

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Dennis Manning pointed Valid Video for the inaugural Sunshine Millions Dash at Gulfstream Park last winter for several months and was rewarded with a game victory over the highly regarded California invader Excessivepleasure.

One year later, Manning has set his sights firmly on the Sunshine Millions Sprint and is confident he will get a similar effort from Valid Video here this Saturday.

"I'm not sure he can beat horses like Shake You Down or Midas Eyes, but I'll guarantee my horse will step up to the race real big," said Manning.
